Supernormal

One of Melbourne’s most famous restaurants – with its lobster brioche bun that has a cult following – is coming to us. Supernormal Brisbane will open on Queen Street in 2023.

The restaurant is one of celebrated chef Andrew McConnell’s eateries, and this new opening will be the first venue outside of Victoria for the Trader House team. McConnell and his team are also behind Cutler & Co, Marion and Gimlet, which was recently the highest-ranking Aussie eatery in the renowned World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.

“For the past seven years, we’ve welcomed many interstate and international guests to Supernormal in Melbourne,” said McConnell in a statement. “Now, we look forward to contributing to Brisbane’s already growing and vibrant food scene.”

The new Supernormal restaurant will be located at 443 Queen Street, in a new development by Singaporean architects WOHA, with views of the Story Bridge and Brisbane River.

While still in the early design stages, Brisbane’s Supernormal will have the same spectacular interior design as the original – influenced by Japanese eateries. The Trader House group has engaged the architectural and interior design services of Vince Alafaci and Caroline Choker of Sydney’s ACME & Co to bring it to life.

The modern Asian restaurant will seat around 120 guests with al fresco and private dining spaces. As we’ve come to expect in Melbourne, this new Supernormal will have the same seafood focus on its menu, with the addition of new dishes that celebrate Queensland produce.

You’ll likely find plenty of Chinese influence on the menu – an echo of McConnell’s time spent living and working in Shanghai and Hong Kong. The Melbourne menu features dishes such as dumplings, bao and Sichuan peppered brisket, for example.
