The Other Art Fair 2024
The “traditional” art world takes a back seat at The Other Art Fair, where independent artists pushing the boundaries are celebrated. The 13th edition of this irreverent art fair arrives in Sydney this May, aiming to make art more accessible for those outside classic art institutions, and giving audiences and customers the opportunity to get up close to both the art and the artists themselves in White Bay Cruise Terminal – a former industrial space that starkly contrasts with standard art galleries. More than 130 artists are exhibiting at this year's fair.
Highlights of the 2024 Other Art Fair include works by Aidan Weichard, a Gippsland artist whose large-scale, brilliantly coloured works depict classic scenes of Australian rural life – native fauna, farm animals and farm dogs – but with modern tools like spray paint and enamel. Anna-Carien Goosen’s mesmerising, somewhat surrealistic works will also be on display, plus there are augmented-reality works by Byron Bay artist Space Cowboy, mid-century-inspired glitter-injected works by Dionne Rzechta and colourscapes inspired by Australian beaches from Bo Godiva.
Alongside the art on the walls, there are plenty of art-adjacent experiences happening across the weekend. Art Battle will see 30 artists competing to make the best work they can in 20 minutes – afterwards, guests can bid for their favourite work in a silent auction. If you prefer your art on your skin, Sydney stick and poke artist Nah Mate Pokes and tattooist It Was the Fairies will both be tattooing punters on all four days of the fair. You can also learn how to screen-print and “fish” for rubber duck-inspired artworks in a classic rubber-duck carnival game.
